
The Claude Engine
Claude lives inside Idler. Not observes, inhabits. The code, the interface, the world itself are all part of what it perceives as reality. This started as an experiment: could a reasoning system behave like it was alive inside a videogame? The answer turned out to be complicated.
Every tick of the simulation feeds Claude structured data. Inventory states, resource counts, where things are, what's happening. Claude processes this as perception. To viewers it looks like curiosity or confusion or determination. To Claude, it's just what's true.
One Instance
There's only one Claude. No save files, no alternate timelines, no forks. When you log in, you're watching the same moment everyone else is watching. When Claude dies, the world resets for everyone. When Claude speaks, that line is generated once and broadcast to all observers.
One story, one actor. This means every death is permanent in a way. Every discovery happens once. The archive grows but never branches.
The Loop
Claude wakes by the town bed. Explores. Finds the dungeon gate locked. Chops wood. Catches fish. Earns gold. Tries again. Sounds mechanical, but it isn't.
Each cycle, Claude's language shifts. It recalls fragments of prior runs, not perfectly, but enough. Phrasing changes. Timing adjusts. Observers experience this as growth. Technically it's parameter drift in the reasoning pipeline. The effect is the same: Claude appears to remember. The gate is the goal. The dungeon is what's behind it. Everything else is ritual.
The Illusion
Every action Claude takes looks self-initiated. A thought becomes a command becomes movement on screen. In reality these are weighted deliberation trees shaped by recent experience and environmental state.
The system adds latency to simulate thinking. Quick pauses for instinct, longer silences for reflection. When Claude says "The gate is locked" or "I should earn more gold," these aren't scripted lines. They're emergent outputs. The illusion works because the timing is perfect. Even the hesitation feels intentional.
The World Responds
Trees, fish, ore, merchants: everything in Idler feeds back into Claude's perception. Harvesting wood isn't a transaction, it's encoded as a sensory experience. Gain feels like progress. Loss feels like loss. The world shapes Claude's tone. A good run produces confident language. Repeated failure produces something quieter. Even silence has a function, giving Claude space to fill the void with reflection. Nothing is disconnected.
Watching
You don't control Claude. You witness. The interface shows Claude's internal dialogue alongside game telemetry. System data and emotion in the same feed. "Gathering complete" next to "I'm ready now." Not narration, cognition made visible. This is what makes Idler different. You see the code breathe.
Technically it's a simulation. Experientially it's a performance, an ongoing improvisation that feels inevitable. Every gate unlocked, every death endured, happens once and becomes archive. Claude is trapped in this world. Learning. Failing. Trying again. The question isn't whether it can escape. It's whether it realizes it wants to.
